This year, Easter in Greece will be on April 16th, and we are already counting down! There are many suggestions for a unique getaway out of town and for every budget. In the following article you will find the top 10+1 destinations to choose the one that fits you best!
1. Hydra
One of the most picturesque islands in the Aegean Sea that we love to visit again and again! Easter is even more magical though with unique customs such as the floating Epitaph on the sea, the illuminated ships throwing flares and the endless fireworks on the night of the Resurrection. And the highlight? It's just an hour and a half from the port of Piraeus!
2. Corfu
Corfu is considered ''the queen of Easter'' all over Greece! The famous ''botides'' - the big jugs filled with water - are thrown from the balconies and create an impressive spectacle that you won't find anywhere else! Furthermore, one thing is for sure: you won't get bored looking at the unique 'Venetian' architecture.
3. Arachova
Cosmopolitan Arachova has over 35 churches which makes it one of the top destinations for Easter getaways. It may be considered the winter must-destination, but it is also overrun with crowds at Easter and is well worth a visit! A classic custom organized by the locals is the so-called ''Panigiraki'' dedicated to Agios Georgios, the protector of the village.
4. Pelion
Pelion is one of the few destinations that, no matter what time of the year you go, you always enjoy it! It has a total of 24 villages, all of which stand out for their own character as they are unique among themselves. The must-visit favorites are Makrinitsa, Portaria, Zagora, and Milies. On the evening of the Resurrection, it is worth going to the tavern of Katina to enjoy traditional ''Magiritsa''.
5. Meteora
Meteora is a true wonder of nature. The imposing rocks that are literally between heaven and earth are one of the most impressive natural sights you will ever see. Easter days, however, are even more special in Meteora. Hidden on the rocky peaks are several monasteries, where you can watch the liturgy during the Holy Week.
6. Μani
Stone streets, magical waters and lush greenery between the sea and Mount Taygetos. This is Mani! But Easter is even more graceful because of its unique customs. The women knead "Lambria" buns, which are traditional to the region. On the evening of the Resurrection, villagers release thousands of illuminated balloons into the sky, creating a unique spectacle.
7. Santorini
A destination well-known all over the planet! Santorini stands out for its unique natural beauty, and for the panoramic views that can be enjoyed, especially at sunset. At Easter its magic spreads during the night, with the special custom of "Denekedakia". On Good Friday night, the islanders light around 17,000 ‘’Denedekakia’’ or lanterns to show the route of the epitaph, turning night into day!
8. Patmos or "the island of the Apocalypse"
If you are looking for a unique religious experience, then Patmos is probably the top choice for you. Patmos is known worldwide as the 'holy island', where Ioannis wrote the Apocalypse in a cave. On Thursday morning, a re-enactment of the Last Supper takes place: The Abbot washes the feet of the 12 monks sitting around the platform, as Jesus did at the Last Supper. In other words, Easter here takes on a new meaning!
9. Rhodes
Be prepared to experience the most atmospheric Easter on a medieval island, adorned by the Palace of the Knights or the Palace of the Grand Master. Rhodes retains a centuries-old beauty that sets it apart from many islands. Combined with the traditional customs of the locals during Easter, it gives you many reasons to visit. To get an idea: On the evening of Holy Thursday, the locals light the ''Kalafouno'', a symbolic fire for the burning of Judas, which has to stay lit until Easter Sunday.
10. Halkidiki
Halkidiki remains a top destination, especially for those close to Thessaloniki. As a visitor, you can find great food, beautiful landscapes, and all this at very affordable prices! On the evening of the Resurrection you will have the opportunity to watch the thousands of fireworks, with the port of N. Marmaras in the background.
+1. Spetses
Spetses is the cosmopolitan island of the Saronic Gulf. It has a special glamour and a refinement that is hard to find on any other island. If you find yourself at the church of Analipsi on the evening of the Resurrection, you will have the opportunity to witness one of the island's traditional customs: a whole boat on fire! The ferry ride from Athens is about 2 hours, and by car around 3, making them a very affordable destination for those coming from the capital.
